Gambling Safely: Tools, Limits and Where to Get Help
Gambling is entertainment with a negative expected value. That is not a moral judgement, it is arithmetic: over enough rounds the margin wins, and every tool described on this page exists to make sure the cost of that entertainment stays where you decided it should be. This site does not run any games and has no access to anyone's account — what follows is a description of the protections that exist and how to reach them.
Decide the limits before you open the site
The single most effective safeguard is a number chosen while nothing is at stake. Set a monthly amount you can lose without it affecting anything that matters, and treat it the way you treat a cinema or restaurant budget rather than as an investment that might come back. Decide the time as well as the money — sessions that drift are how a controlled budget stops being controlled.
Then make the decision binding somewhere outside your own memory. Deposit limits in the account, a spending cap in your banking app, or a prepaid Paysafecard voucher that physically cannot spend more than it holds all achieve the same thing: they move the limit from willpower into infrastructure.
The Portuguese framework: SRIJ and RAMJ
Online gambling in Portugal is regulated by the SRIJ — the Serviço de Regulação e Inspeção de Jogos, part of Turismo de Portugal. Licensed operators run on .pt domains and appear on the SRIJ's public list, and playing with one brings specific protections: the special gaming tax is withheld at source so prizes arrive net, disputes have a domestic route, and the operator is bound into the national protection machinery.
The centrepiece of that machinery is the RAMJ, the Registo de Autoexclusão managed by the SRIJ. It is a national register rather than an operator setting: a request is filed online with Chave Móvel Digital or Cartão de Cidadão, or in person, and once registered it applies across every operator licensed in Portugal at once. That is what makes it different in kind from anything a single casino can offer, and it is explained further on our self-exclusion page.
Being straight about Casina: it does not appear on the SRIJ list of licensed operators and works under international licensing instead. A player should understand what that means in practice — a RAMJ registration does not reach it, the domestic dispute route does not apply, and the tax framing is different, with the declaratory responsibility falling on the player and questions belonging to the Autoridade Tributária. None of that is hidden here, and no licence number is invented to paper over it.
Warning signs worth naming
The patterns that matter are behavioural rather than financial. Chasing losses — increasing stakes to recover a bad session — is the clearest single indicator. Others: gambling with money meant for something else, borrowing to play, hiding the extent of it from people close to you, playing to escape stress rather than for enjoyment, and cancelling a withdrawal in order to keep playing. That last one is worth watching for specifically, because it is the one that feels like nothing at the time.
Where to get help in Portugal
Support is free, confidential and does not require a diagnosis to access. SICAD, the Serviço de Intervenção nos Comportamentos Aditivos e nas Dependências, is the public body covering addictive behaviours including gambling, and it points towards local treatment services. Linha Vida, reachable on 1414, is the national helpline and the simplest first call. Jogadores Anónimos Portugal runs peer support groups for people who prefer that route.
Practical measures work alongside conversation. Most Portuguese banks now let a card block gambling merchant categories from inside the app, and blocking software on a phone or computer removes the sites from reach entirely. Neither replaces support, and both make a decision much easier to keep.
Under-18s
Gambling is for adults only. Every regulated operator verifies age before a payout and closes accounts found to belong to minors, but the more effective protection is at home: parental controls on shared devices, and no saved passwords or stored payment methods on a phone a child uses.
Licences, age verification and restricted countries
A licence is checkable or it is worthless. Regulated operators print the licence number and the regulator's name in the site footer, and the number should resolve to an entry in that regulator's public register naming the same company that appears in the footer. A licence claimed without a number, or a number that does not resolve, tells you everything you need to know before depositing.
Age verification and country restrictions belong to the same legal frame. Operators must confirm identity and age before releasing money, which is why the document check described on our withdrawal guide is not optional. And every operator publishes a list of restricted countries in its terms; opening an account from one of them usually surfaces at payout time, when a balance is already at risk. Reading that list first costs nothing.
The tools inside an account, and what each one does
Deposit limits cap how much money may enter the account over a day, a week or a month, and are the foundation everything else rests on. They are deliberately asymmetric: a reduction takes effect immediately, while an increase waits out a cooling-off period, so a limit cannot be raised in the moment it is most tempting to raise it. Loss limits work on net losses rather than deposits, and wager limits cap total turnover regardless of outcome.
Time-based tools address a different risk. A session reminder interrupts play at set intervals with the elapsed time and the running result, which is often enough on its own; a session limit ends play outright when the period expires. A time-out is a short fixed break — a day, a week, a month — during which the account will not accept a deposit or a bet, while the balance stays intact and marketing stops.
Self-exclusion is the heaviest instrument an operator offers: the account closes for a long period, usually months or years, promotional contact ends, and the block generally cannot be lifted early even by asking. Remaining real money is normally returned; active bonuses are forfeited. Where an operator is licensed in Portugal, the national RAMJ register does the same thing across every licensed site at once, which is why it is the tool to reach for when the problem is bigger than one account.
